new research for people allergic to cats

new research for cat allergies

This could be amazing news: scientists from Purina, the pet food company, have provided new hope for people with cat allergies. Are you allergic to cats? Is your partner, a family member, or someone close to you? One in five people are. In fact, allergies to cats is a major reason why people don’t have cats, or return an adopted cat to a shelter because they discover they, or a family member, have cat allergies. As any of you who follow The Scratching Post may know, I am allergic to cats. To my own, wonderful cats. My eyes are always red and itchy, and i’m always congested, But as much as I suffer from these symptoms, I tolerate them, because I love my cats. Still, I wish I could get some relief from my discomfort.

June of this year, 2019, Purina researchers announced,

Feeding cats a diet coated in a specially formulated egg powder product can neutralize the feline allergens that trigger [allergic] symptoms in people..

dvm360 (Doctor Veterinary Medicine) reported that researchers found a protein in cat’s saliva called Fed d1; they aren’t sure it’s purpose for cats, but they know it’s responsible for 95% of why people have allergic reactions. There is no allergy-free cat breed, including hairless cats, since all cats have Fed d1 in their saliva.

This is how Fed d1 gets distributed

A grooming cat licks it’s fur, a lot, because cats are clean, and that’s a good thing. The not so good result of being such fastidious creatures, is that because Fed d1 is in the cat’s saliva and sebaceous glands, it gets on their fur. Then the cat sheds fur and dander (flakes of skin) into your house: carpets, curtains, bedsheets, the air. Other animals have dander, but cat dander is small and “sticky” and therefore harder to get rid of.

The result of all this dander for people who are sensitive to Fed d1, is the misery of an allergic response. That happens because Fed d1 binds with a molecule, lgE, found in human immune systems, and due to the binding of these molecules, the effect triggers allergic symptoms.

The decade-long research by Purina scientists, published in Immunity, Inflammation and Disease, found that the IgY molecule present in egg yolk (an antibody passed from hens to their chicks) can block specific parts of the Fel d1 molecule. That is significant because if parts of Fed.d1 molecules are prevented from binding with the molecule lgE (the one in human immune systems), it can eliminate, or at least reduced allergic reactions.

Purina tested the egg yolk formula on cats. According to the scientists, there was no health difference between the control cats and the cats eating the special diet, which they conclude makes it safe to add the egg product to cats diets. They also said that the egg product doesn’t destroy Fel d1.

Immunologist Dr. Ebenezer Satyaraj, director of molecular nutrition at Purina and lead investigator on allergy research, confidently said,

“Our discovery has the potential to transform how people manage cat allergens.”

The Algonquin Hotel cat fashion show 2019

The Algonquin Hotel loves cats!

The Algonquin Hotel, located mid-town Manhattan, is hosting a cat fashion show on Thursday, August 1, 2019. It’s a fundraiser for Animal Alliance NYC.

The Algonquin Hotel opened in 1902. Since the 1920s, the Hotel has had a resident cat. Meet Hamlet, adopted from Bideawee, an animal shelter in Wantagh, Long Island.

He was rescued as a stray, living in a feral cat colony. Actually, he’s the eighth Hamlet. There were also three Matildas.

The first Hamlet was named forty years ago: the renowned actor, John Barrymore, lived at The Algonquin, and Hamlet was Mr. Barrymore’s most famous theatrical role.

Impractical Jokers Benjamin the Cat

Benjamin the Cat

Have you watched Impractical Jokers on TruTV? Love the show. It’s silly, it’s fun. Murr, Q, Joe and Sal, are “life long friends” from Staten Island, New York. Impractical Jokers and Benjamin the CatOn Impractical Jokers, they cook up scenarios to embarrass each other, and whoever is least successful fulfilling the task, gets punished. And these guys come up with hilarious stuff.

Impractical Jokers has another character who makes occasional appearances on the show, usually to taunt Sal.Benjamin the Cat

It’s The Impractical Jokers Benjamin the Cat, a big black cat — really big. Benjamin the Cat is actually someone in a black cat suit.

No one knows who the guy or gal in the suit is, but Benjamin the Cat terrifies Sal.

No one knows why Sal is afraid of cats, but it sure is funny.

traveling with my cat without kitty litter

my cat without kitty litter

If you have ever traveled with your cat, then you’ve probably experienced this problem: what do I do about traveling with my cat without kitty litter. I have flown with both of my cats, which usually means many long hours in their carriers.

My cat Toby is a camel, he won’t pee until he steps into a kitty litter box. Even if the poor guy is in his carrier for many hours. Marnie, on the other hand, doesn’t hesitate. If she has to pee, she has to pee. I’ve put towels on the floor of her carrier, but when Marnie peed on it, that meant she laid on a wet towel, which obviously is unacceptable for her, and didn’t smell so good for us (and other passengers). Packing extra towels is bulky, and what to do with the soiled one? I finally figured out a better solution.

Most pet stores carry potty pads, or a similar product. Potty pads are designed for house training puppies.

Dogs and puppies come in various sizes, so potty pads do too. For my cats, I get the one for small dogs.

So when we fly, or even take long drives in the car, I’ll wrap a potty pad on the floor f the carrier.

And, I carry extra pads, which I keep in a plastic bag. The reason for the plastic bag is actually to use if my cat does use the pad, I have a way to contain the soiled pad. It’s happened. On an airplane, Marnie peed a lot, on the pad.Thank god I had something to put the very wet pad in.

Toby refuses to pee, for hours! Still, just in case.

new state law for cat declawing

New law for cats

Onychectomy, or declawing, is legal in the USA except in a few places like Denver, CO. In 2017 Denver prohibited declawing, and in 2010 so did the municipalities Berkley, Beverly Hills, Burbank, Culver City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Santa Monica. Now, there’s a new state law for cats. New York became the first state in the USA to outlaw declawing. Governor Cuomo signed the ban into law on June 4, 2019.
new cat law
It is a controversial procedure and for good reason. Do you know what declawing really is? Click here about declawing to read the actual description of what declawing is and how it effects the cat.

One of the controversies about declawing is that by not having the option to declaw could minimize how many cats get adopted from shelters, because furniture scratching is major complaint against having cats. The argument against that is: if your furniture is more important than your cat, maybe you shouldn’t have a cat in the first place.

The following countries already banned or the practice is viewed as extremely inhuman and performed only under extreme circumstances:

England
Scotland
Wales
Italy
Austria
Switzerland
Norway
Sweden
Ireland
Denmark
Finland
Slovenia
Brazil
Australia
New Zealand
Serbia
Montenegro
Macedonia
Slovenia
France
Germany
Bosnia
Malta
Netherlands
Northern Ireland
Portugal

Let’s hope the USA is added to the list.
