kitty litter detects sick cats

Someone has figured it out: kitty litter detects sick cats.  There are many kitty litter products on the market, for many purposes, but none that detects sick cats – sounds like a good idea.

Pretty Litter is a new company that offers kitty litter that detects sick cats. My Kitty Care went on Pretty Litter’s website, and saw this

…changes color to detect common feline health issues.

but couldn’t find out what material is used for the product so My Kitty Care contacted The company. Erin Vadala handles the company’s media, and responded with the following:

Pretty Litter uses natural ingredients made of silica gel with an additive similar to the ph dipstick a veterinarian would use to test a cat for any urinary anomalies. It’s scoopable, flushable, dust-free, feline-safe, and
eco-friendly.
Thanks, Erin

This kitty litter may be helpful in detecting CKD (chronic kidney disease) or acute kidney disease, which many cats get, and urinary infections. These health problems, like most health issues with cats, are difficult to detect, especially early in the disease – so it would be terrific if this Pretty Litter kitty litter really works.

Should I neuter my cat?

Should I neuter my cat? This simple diagram illustrates what vets and other cat professionals have been advocating for years. There is nothing worse than seeing stray cats, often abandoned, abused and emaciated. We can’t rescue all of these poor guys, but we certainly can do our part to not increase the cat population and have more cats need homes. There are already so many who do. Plus, it’s also another way for you to take care of your cat(s) and let them, and you, be healthier and happier.

These lucky kittens were rescued and brought back to health by ARF, a no-kill shelter in New York. However, most shelters destroy hundreds of cats every day. Destroy – that means KILL them, often after enduring much suffering.

Does my cat have thyroid disease?

Does my cat have thyroid disease? Pay attention to your cat’s eating habits because one of several health issues could be thyroid disease. My cat Bear has CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease). One of the symptoms is loss of appetite which can become severe enough that they can starve to death, which is why cats, Bear included, are prescribed appetites stimulants. Typically, cats who have CKD suffer from bad indigestion, enough so that they just don’t want to eat. In fact, a year ago when Bear was so sick, we worried she’d starve to death.

But via coaxing, experimenting with different foods and medications, including appetite stimulants (see post about that) she finally ate, albeit not much. So a few months ago, we were thrilled when Bear’s appetite improved. She ate the low salt deli turkey, the treats, and more of the wet cat food. Until, she became ravenous. She ate so much, that it became a concern, Barbara Grimes, from East Hampton Veterinary Clinic suggested a blood test to check her thyroid levels.

If your cat is unexplainably ravenous, you might want to have your vet test your cat for thyroid disease. Bear was tested, and the results for thyroid disease was negative. Now we just have to continue with her CKD care, and be happy she’s eating.

After you finish your favorite cereal, the box is garbage and gets thrown away. But before you do that, take out the liner, shake out any cereal crumbs, then recycle it.

prevent sinus infections in your cat

Here are tips to prevent sinus infections in your cat:

Don’t smoke where your cat lives. Second-hand smoke significantly impacts your cat’s respiratory and immunologic health.

Eliminate synthetic room sprays, fragrance plug-ins, carpet deodorizers, artificially scented candles and potpourri.

Switch to a dust-free litter.

Consider an air purifier if your home is carpeted or more than 30 years old.

Offer food and water out of non-toxic stainless steel or glass bowls (eliminate plastic containers and porcelain from China that may contain heavy metal glazes).

Minimize stressful events in your kitty’s life and provide environmental enrichment.

Feed a balanced, fresh food, species-appropriate diet. Avoid dry food (which contain carcinogenic heterocyclic amines and acrylamides).

Scrutinize food labels: eliminate all grains, byproducts, preservatives, colorings.

Use extreme caution when it comes to vaccinating your cat, especially if she has been diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection at any point in her life. If your kitty received a full set of well-timed kitten shots and she lives indoors, she likely has no need to be re-vaccinated as an adult.
